Mac Dre could be shut out of Riverbank Updated

I get the strangest phone calls sometimes. This morning as I am trying just to wake up I get a call from someone that I don't recognize and the mystery caller sounds a bit out of breath. Not one to just hang up, I decide to listen to what he has to say.

His first words are, "Is this Mojo? Are you that writer dude for that one web page?" I explain to out of breath mystery guy that I a write for ModestoFamous.com and he seems relieved that he has called the correct number. "You got to write about some shit for me," he says. "They are trying to take Mac Dre out of Riverbank."

It takes me a minute to figure out what out of breath mystery guy is jabbering about but then I remember that Mac Dre was an entertainer based in Sacramento. He was gunned down a while ago in Kansas City and is now some sort of California-based gangster rap folk hero like Tupac Shakur. There is even a giant mural of Shakur and Dre painted on the side of a clothing store on the corner of Morris and McHenry in Modesto.

Anyway, I ended up speaking to out of breath mystery guy for about 20 minutes while he was apparently supposed to be in class at Riverbank High. He explained his love for rap music and his love and passion for local artists. I started the conversation thinking the guy was a nut but by the end, I just heard a kid whose hero was about to banished by the Riverbank Unified School District.

The district will vote tonight to get Dre's image and name out of it's schools. There will be no more Mac Dre shirts, pants or anything else to be worn on campuses. The term, "Mac Dre" will be added to a banned list that also includes "eight ball," "Joe Camel," "Nor Cal," "Rolling Hard," "Sol Beer," "south pole" and "vato loco."

After doing a bit of research while on the phone I learned that Dre was also known also known for his involvement with the drug ecstasy. I explained this to my concerned citizen and he said simply, "I called you because I heard that you were cool and that you could write about the good things Dre did also. Dre made it out of the ghetto man. We wear his gear because he is a hero to us. We don't wear his gear to sell drugs."

So here I am writing about Mac Dre and I am put in an odd position here. I understand both sides of the issue. The adults want negative influences out of schools and the kids want to freely display their heroes. What impressed me is that this kid took the time to contact me. He would have had to do some research to get my number. This issue really concerned him. How many kids care enough about anything anymore to make the call and try to get their cause some press. Most likely Mac Dre will be banned and in my opinion that will drive another wedge between kids and the adults that are trying to do what is best for them.

How do you feel about this issue? Is Mac Dre really hurting anything? Could it be that school district is making a bigger issue out of this then it should be? I am just the middle man here. Please don't shoot the messenger.
