rugby
I was flipping through our event calendar this morning and I came across an event that I could not resist writing about. Next Saturday beginning with a keg tapping at 10 AM, madness will take place as Harlotfest and Pubcrawl take over our fair little city for the 16th year in a row.

Harlotfest XVI is a rugby tournament we hold every year for the past 16 years. The longest lasting of its kind, basicly you put your name into a hat and get selected onto a team. You dont actually dont eneter as a team, we provide one for you. Although this is an indivials tournament, nothing could be further from the truth. People from all walks of life come to Modesto and play in our one of a kind event.

It's always been a sad day when something that you knew was a good thing has gone and disappeared. As of now, that thing that is gone is the Harlotfest as you knew it. Created by two players from the Stanislaus Rugby Football Club, Scott McDonald and Miles Hunter back in 1991, this year would have been the 15th birthday of this unique event. The Harlotfest gave rugby players across the nation, and even around the world, a new way to attend tournaments and play rugby. Ruggers know that playing for another team during a tournament is called whoring, but in a good way. We can't pick an exact point in time when this practice began but we gave the rugby whore his/her own tournament. That tournament happens every third weekend in October, this year on the 21st.

For those who dont know, we have had a men's rugby team here in modesto for 32 years, The Stanislaus Rugby football Club and we have been proud to call Modesto our home. As a member of the Stanislaus Rugby Football Club, I have to admit that the battle with the city for a place for us to practice is exhausting. The battle bagan this past season when we tried to renew our reservations for any park with lights in the City of Modesto, and were denied because of the cleats we wear. The funny thing is, we wear the same cleats as soccer players do. So does that mean that MYSA or any of these local adult soccer leauge have to find new places to play and practice? The answer to that is no! I cant even begin to do that math, because I dont know how many soccer players practice and play in Modesto Parks, but I know its a whole lot more than 20 guys 2 days a week for 4 months. We are a small fraction of this total but yet we our sport has been excluded from being able to rent a practice field.
