How do people survive without medical insurance? **Feedback requested please**

Just yesterday I received an itemized statement for my stay at UCSF Medical Center a couple of weeks ago. I also received a statement from the company that took me on a one hour and 10 minute helicopter ride to Roseville where I needed to receive care.

The most interesting thing about the two statements was their detail. Since last October I have been in and out of the hospital more times than I can even recall but I have never received statements like these that break down each and every penny billed.

The first of the two statements that I opened was the one from UCSF. After reading the nearly 20 pages of charges, I began to realize just how lucky I am to have such great and affordable health care coverage. The final tally there for six days was right around $500,000!

What would happen if I was in need of a liver transplant and I didn't have the cash or insurance to cover this? I know that programs exist to help, but I am not sure just how they all work. This could easily break the financial backbone of any family and that is very sad to me.

Let's take a look at some of the charges that I incurred:

Riafaximin - A very unique antibiotic known to kill even the deadliest of infections and help balance the ammonia levels of liver transplant patients so we don't get disoriented, confused and very forgetful: $97.00 per tablet. I take six of these every day.

One day of room use at UCSF: $5,189.00.

Use of the lab at UCSF to process my constant blood testing: $24,000.00.

One pint of blood products - I needed about seven: $457.00 each.

That is just a sample of what things cost. How do they justify these crazy amounts? The one item that really stood out to me was the antibiotic that I mentioned.

I was charged $97.00 per tablet for it at the hospital, but when I left there I picked up 180 tablets of the exact same medicine (not a generic version) at a pharmacy. The pharmacy cost for that medicine would have been close to $1,200.00. That works out to nearly $7.00 per tablet. How could the hospital charge $90.00 more for every single tablet? That fact just like the medicine itself is hard to swallow! With my insurance, I paid $4.50 for the prescription of 180 pills. I know how lucky that I am!

Now, let me mention the helicopter transport charge real quick. Like I stated above, the trip took about an hour. There was a pilot on board and two really great nurses. One nurse administered fluids via IV, some medicine for nausea, an injection so I did not get air sick or too anxious and also gave me two doses of pain medicine. The other nurse helped get me into and out of the helicopter and kept me quite calm because she knew that I was terrified. I honestly thought that I was going to die that night. I mean that.

Anyway, the air ambulance transport was billed out at $31,500.00! That works out to be $525.00 for every single minute! With that much cash I could have probably put a decent down payment on the helicopter or had a pretty nice little house built on Rock Island just off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico!

How do you feel about the cost of medical insurance and medical care? Is it hurting your family? My parents work and they work hard and they pay almost $600.00 per month for insurance that only covers 80% of their charges. That percentage may seem adequate but think about the fact that I have probably racked up almost two million dollars in fees in recent months and I am facing a $600,000 transplant that is required to save my life. My parents would have to shell out 20 percent of almost three million dollars! They would never be able to do that!

I would love some feedback on this issue please. Has anyone watched the Micheal Moore film, Sicko? I have yet to see it but I will be renting it soon. I have heard that it is a real eye opener even if you are not a huge Moore fan.

Stay healthy!

Health Insurance

We need it, just as we need to breath clean air and eat the right kind of food. Mojo, unfortunately not everyone out there has it. But thankfully there are some affordable health care plans out there. But, it just takes a little work to find them. A little work! The same goes for keeping our air clean, choosing the right kinds of foods to eat as well as choosing to spend the your hard earn cash on health insurance verses on those pack of smokes that are destroying your body. Its no secret, if you don’t have health insurance; You can deplete your families nest egg in a matter of days. Regardless if you get admitted in the hospital for the removal of your appendix or something way huge like a hip replacement.
Back when I was 35 I had a heart attack and spent 4 days in ICU.. Ya, One morning I started to have problems with my heart. Well, I was having chest pains and my wife wasted no time and got me down to emergency fast. Thank God for her, they caught it before it went to a full blown out heart attack. Ya Mojo, back then I weighed in at 300lbs, smoked like a train since I was 16 as well as abused my body partying like a rock star. I learned the hard way Ruben, just because you CAN doesn’t mean you should. I was a big dummy! Even still, after my hospital bad health experience, I still smoked and enjoy drinking with friends. Big Dummy I was, you guessed it!
Hey, I am only human here. It wasn’t till I was 38 that I decided that I wanted to LIVE. Anywho, I gave my heart to Jesus 110%. Not because I needed to but because I wanted to.. I loked at my self and said, I have a wonderful wife, a great job and a loving family. I WANT TO LIVE!
Well, since then on. I felt like I have been reborn through him and I am now living a new life.
My deal with Jesus.. I asked him to help me with my addictions & if he did, I would give him all the glory on my success. I am a man of my word Mojo and my Lord knows it. He helped me and I will shout his name whenever I can and to anyone that will willing listen.
OK back to the ICU & Health Insurance..
For those 4 days. My bill was over two hundred thousand dollars. Thankfully we have wonderful health insurance through my wife’s work and it covered the whole thing.

Health Insurance for the inelligable..

Alot of people dont realize what happens to the poor working clas..myself included. When my son was little and I didnt have health care I was eligable for government programs. When he was older I had good insurance through my employer. Now..uggh My son is over 18 and in the Military(as you know)and being a 38 year old woman with no children under 18 who has had sugery made me inelligable for EVERYTHING.

I had an opportunity to apply and my uncle was willing to pay for it for me. I applied and applied..NO ONE would take me due to what they consider pre-existing conditons unless I was coming through a group plan where they have no choices then. I finally fibbed a bit on my application one last time and got coverage. It is costing me 330 a month! However it will only last for a short time and the benifits suck. If I need to go to the ER I know I am going to have to come up with 150 just to walk in the door. If I am admitted that's wavied but lucky me I get to pay 250 for a daily rate at the hospital.

I went months and months without anything and it just made me terrified. I knew I should have gotten care often and didnt because I didnt have the money to cover the cash prices. And I still dont go alot of times when I should because I am afraid of the bills. There are wayyyyy more of us out here that have NOTHING than most people realize. Once your kids are grown we are all on our own out here. People in other countries are NEVER worried that if they go to the doctor that they are going to lose their homes etc.

I highly recommend Michael Moores film Sicko... it really puts things in prospective for all of!

Stephanie~Well behaved women rarely make history!

That stinks love

I just can’t figure it out mind ya.. I love this Country, but I just can’t figure out why health insurance can’t be more affordable for everyone. It just stinks.. Back when I was in my early 20’s, I didn’t have health insurance and I had to have my appendicitis removed. OMG talk about some serious pain! I was so ready for someone to just shoot me. It was so unbearable. But still, I didn’t have health insurance and I didn’t want to go to the doctor.. Me I was a big dummy and I thought it was from the taco trucks I had earlier.
DORK! I AM..
I endured the pain all night long and the fallowing morning my friend who is a Doctor came by and diagnosed me with a pendacites. She said, Efren it has to come out. Crap! I said.. Actually I said something different but I will spare you all the details cause IM not so much of a potty mouth anymore. Smiles..

Still, I didn’t want to go to the doctor because I had just bought my first home and I thought I would lose it. Ya, big dummy I was/am for sure… but, the other alternative was if it ruptured, I would die. By morning the pain had subsided somewhat and I thought I would be ok. Nope, a little voice spoke to me and said, Efren! You need to get to the hospital! You have many more things to do in this life.
Seriously friends, I thought I was going nuts hearing voices and/or from the pain endured all night long. Still, I bucked up after my friend called me and said, Efren.. My friend who is another doctor will see you and don’t worry.. He will see you for free.
OK so I went down to see him & he said, Efren you need to have it come out now or you may die! Still, I told him I don’t have health insurance and very little money. He suggested that I go to the county hospital and have it removed there. It will be a fraction of the cost and they will bill you with the determining factor of how much money you make. So there I went, to the Stanislaus County Hospital. After a few quick questions, they put a lean on my new home I just bought and rushed me in to the emergency room. I ask you, how many folks out there have gone through what I went through and didn’t go to the hospital because they feared of losing what little they worked so hard for?
How many have died because they feared of the hospital bills that would swallow them hole?.. It’s just not right! I was lucky. I survived this ordeal & my bill was about $8,000 A small price to pay for my life, but still.. If I would have went to any other hospital,.. I would probably still be paying this bill & have gotten an even bigger lean on my first house. Me, I have looking at the presidential candidates and studying the numbers.. But I have yet to hear any new big ideas about affordable health care for everyone. It shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg if you break one..
Heaven helps us all..

PS Thank God for little voices.. Their always their, but we aren’t always listening.

The Scar

Ok I forgot, I now have this cool little scare on my side.. It will be there for the rest of my life to remind me that angels are always with us and are speaking g to us.. Friends, all we have to do is just listen.
OH! One more thing.. The Scar! it also made for a great story to share with my nephew when he was 4 years old. The scar, ya I got it in one of my fights against the dark side when I was just a young Jedi Night.. LOL I have the photo to prove it! See below..

Hmm, I never did tell him the truth about my scar; I wonder if he still thinks I got the scar from my fight with Darth Vader.. LOL ya not too much of a dummy here anymore, but still and always will be a dork.. Smiles
