A Tokyo Express sushi and Aquanett head-banging kind of night

It is after 1:00 a.m. and I just got home from an evening downtown. I went out tonight primarily to meet a friend for a movie but I ended up having dinner and checking out a live show at the Fat Cat that my ears are still ringing from as well. I love that I can see a movie at a great theater, have sushi and see a concert all within a couple of blocks. This is really a cool little city that we live in.

I have probably mentioned here before that I am a big sushi fan and I admit to being sad when I discovered that Aquashi was gone for good. The one thing that I miss about them most was being able to get Sushi until 2:00 a.m. But, there is still a place for sushi downtown that is always fresh and delicious and their prices are much, much less than Aquashi charged.

If you are a sushi fan, make sure to check out Tokyo Express on J Street. The owner, George and his family take a great deal of pride in what they do and I have never had a bad meal there. If you are not a sushi fan, try some traditional Chinese food or even Japanese food. They cook up a delicious stir fry meal and awesome Teriyaki dishes.

After having dinner at Tokyo Express I met up with my friend for a movie and then I headed over to the Fat Cat to see if Aquanett had performed yet. I got there just as they were being introduced and I am glad that I did not miss any of their show. It is always fun to watch cover bands like these guys. The best part of shows like this for me is watching the crowd. Aquanett is an 80's tribute band complete with huge hair, bandanas tied to their snake skin pants and colorful screaming guitars. As they played it was obvious that they really made the crowd happy. People were singing along, dancing and really getting into the show. Being carried back in time is fun once in a while and Aquanett really had people re-living their pasts.

All in all, I had a great night. I have said it over and over again and I will say it again: If you never make the time to see what is happening in downtown Modesto, you really should. Check out our event calendar or surf on over to www.visitmodesto.com for event schedules.

Have a great Thursday Modesto and check back here tomorrow evening for a preview of American Graffiti events scheduled for this weekend. If have yet to do so, you better head for your attic and pull out those poodle skirts and bomber jackets!

Have fun out there!

You know, I have to say that

You know, I have to say that I have never been horribly impressed with Tokyo Express. I work in the downtown area and have had lunch at most of the places around here and I LOVE sushi...but I always found the service to be slow, the employees seem cold. The appearance of the restaurant leaves much to be desired as well, just seems like they don't do much to keep the place up or even clean really. The pricing isn't too bad, I will give them that. I think my fave place to get sushi is Torii or Miki's - but the location doesn't make it easy to plan a night out downtown. It is too bad that there is such a limited amount to choose from downtown when it comes to Asian cuisine. Another good Japanese place would be nice - maybe a bit less expensive than Aquashi was.
