MODESTO CIVIC LEADERS AND SKYWEST AIRLINE STAFF JOINTLY LAUNCH CAMPAIGN TO ANNOUNCE NEW SERVICE BETWEEN MODESTO AND LOS ANGELES

FOUR NEW ROUND-TRIP FLIGHTS BEGIN JUNE 8

Modesto, Calif. Life will get a lot easier for air travelers in Modesto and Stanislaus County next month. Representatives of SkyWest Airlines joined Modesto civic leaders today to celebrate the announcement that the airline will inaugurate four round-trip flights daily between Modesto and Los Angeles on June 8, and to launch a multi-media campaign to promote the new service.

The introductory fare for the new service, operated under the United Express name, will be $79 one way.

According to Doug Sweetland, director of Economic Development for the Stanislaus Economic Development & Workforce Alliance, the new service will be a boon to both business and leisure travelers. For the first time, residents of Modesto and Stanislaus County wont be faced with long commutes to larger cities to get on a plane to Los Angeles, he noted. Theyll be able to save the time and hassle of the drive, and the cost of parking and gas. And ultimately, theyll have more time to spend in their offices or with their families. This is great news for people who frequently travel.

Sweetland noted that a business travel survey done for the Modesto City-County Airport by Mead & Hunt, an airline industry consulting group, showed that Los Angeles is a top destination for business travelers and that 81 percent of the respondents felt that local commercial air service is very or somewhat important.

Modesto Mayor Jim Ridenour congratulated SkyWest officials for determining that the new service would be a viable option for air travelers in the area. Our community will greatly benefit from this new service. We can now enjoy travel to Los Angeles from the comfort and convenience of our hometown airport, he said.

The new service will allow travelers in Stanislaus County to take four direct flights to Los Angeles as their ultimate destination, or as a hub for connecting flights to domestic and international destinations. The SkyWest service nearly doubles the number of daily flights originating in Modesto. There are currently five daily SkyWest flights to San Francisco.

Now Modesto is connected to two of the major air travel hubs in the U.S., said Michael Musca, manager of the Modesto City-County Airport. With SkyWests competitive fares to both San Francisco and Los Angeles, there is no reason for travelers to drive to another airport, he added. Musca also noted that parking at the Modesto Airport is free.

SkyWest Airlines has been serving Modesto since 1998. The airline was named the Number One On-Time Mainland Airline in the United States by the Department of Transportation for 2005, a year in which they carried 16.5 million passengers. System-wide, SkyWest employs more than 9,000 aviation professionals and serves a total of 123 cities in 38 states and three Canadian provinces with more than 1,500 daily departures.
