Entertainment? The Bee is completely out of touch

by Pitbull
April 14, 2008

The Modesto Bee's entertainment section stories this week: on the cover Indie Fest, Off The Air's Birthday, and the Pink Floyd tribute show at the Gallo Center?

Does anyone even listen to "indie" music? I sure as hell don't know anyone. Is this how the Modesto Bee is getting in touch with a younger audience? Two "indie" music stories in one week???

How out of touch with reality are these people? On Thursday Pepper came to Modesto and sold out the show in advance. The Modesto Bee? Crickets. Saturday, Pure 209 does Groovefest out in the street in front of Tresetti's on 11th and 2000 people attend. Modesto Bee? nothin'.

I heard that only 50 people came out to the Modesto Bee's entertainment cover story indie fest on Sunday over at the Fat Cat. What a joke.

I think the Modesto Bee needs to hire some people that are willing to get off their collective butts and actually get to know what is happening in Modesto. Shake some hands and get to know people. Right now they are completely out of touch.

Either that or these promoters don't know how to send a press release.

All I can say is

All I can say is that, Being a DJ for 18 years plus. The Students have always requested the beats and still do. The beats, are what Pure 209 is spinning. That’s what is being requested at my school dances and private parties.

There is something of value to what the Mr. Pitbull is saying here. With all do respect to the all, I would invite you to check out The Modesto View Mr. Pitbull. Sure it has some Indie type music featured. But, it also has good stuff about Latin Jazz & The Beats that Pure 209 is spinning. As well as the 411 within Modesto. If you want to see what’s up in Hollywood, watch Entertainment tonight. Me, I don’t live there so I don’t really give a hoot who’s baby that is. Big Deal. Smiles I would be more concerned about if it was a healthy one. Still, The Modesto view isn’t Politically driven and it covers more then music.

Ya bro, Pure 209 is on Fire here in Modesto!
Check it out here www.modestoview.com Look for the story on Pure 209 It’s that good!

OK sure, I spot in the magazine from time to time. But I only do so because I belive that Mr. Murphy is serious about our local artist and the business here in our community.

My writings are mostly about the people & issues I care about and the city I love. Modesto! I wont wright about any political yuck and I will only seek out the positive within our community. This year The Modesto View Magazine will get more then your attention. I promise you that! Look for some amazing stuff coming in the next few issues!
Thanks for your Post Mr. Pitbull! Gods Love and good night.

Out of touch

Pitbull,
I agree with what you are saying here. I try to cover a wide variety of events and I invite people to use our site to promote anything that they want to. It has been ages since a promoter came here and posted a press release as an article or a blog entry and I would love to see more of that happening. If I was promoting an event I would utilize every tool available to me.

I will try to make more of an effort to cover a wider variety of events. Maybe people will leave comments here and tell me what they want to see more of or even less of. Feedback will make us better whether it is negative or positive.

Out of Touch

Pitbull-

I could not agree with you more on this issue. It seems that the press outlets (including, but not limited to The Bee) seem to forget that there are other things happening in this community besides the ever popular "coffe community" and indie music.

I think the term "Indie Music" has become a fad. Or rather a definition of a emo based style of music, and that really makes me confused. "Indie" in the true sense means to be "independent". Which means that if you have total control of your art or music you are "independent" of outside influence. To be "indie" as a musician really means you have not signed to a major records lable. The term has never been meant to represent a musial genre, which I believe it now has. Hmmm, weird. So whether your metal, classic rock, reggea, or hip-hop you are "indie" if your not signed to a major lable.

I was at the Pepper show and they rocked the house!! They really showed Modesto what a professional touring act looks, feels and sounds like! One of the best shows I have ever seen in Modesto, and The Bee never made a peep. I wonder if they will note that Dredg is playing at The State this saturday? I know I will be there.

Thanks for the great post!

Sigh

It's tough being a tragically unhip reporter for the local newspaper. Luckily, we keep an open door, phone line and inbox so we can find out about as many events as possible. Our arts writers can be reached by their contact information in the paper. You can find them here: http://www.modbee.com/arts/.

To the Un-hipsters

Hey Mr. Adam, Even though most of the story’s you cover aren’t about our elected officials break dancing at the last city council meeting, Smiles “Entertainment" I do find that the stories you do cover are done very thoroughly and have enjoyed them from time to time.
Best Wishes

PS I too am not the hippest guy in town, but NO matter. I love Jesus and he thinks I’m a pretty hip guy anywho. So, that’s good enough for me.
Yikes! My Qesadilla is burning here!:)

this got my attention

i've been an active dj for 20 years of my life, and been active in the modesto/central valley scene since 2002, yes i agree that the modesto bee is a bit slacking, that is why there is MODESTO FAMOUS to the rescue. positive or not, modesto famous somehow gets some of the bases covered. now stop for a moment to think, what can an individual do to improve and provide more information. since this is all said, this is what i am going to do as a move. i will have weekly interviews with local dj's that makes big differences in our nightlife and community. so watch out for that, it will also be broadcasted in youtube. SO CALLING ALL DJ'S!!!!! anyway, more power to you people and entertainers of central valley.

cheers,
dj chopstiqs of phonostarrs

yep.

well, i've learned that when it comes to modesto, you can't really count on anyone to help you get the word out. i personally have brought bands out from england and all over the country and off the air still seems to get all the press for the same local bands they have playing every show. i just stopped trying to reach the bee, but i found that modesto famous is a better place to get the word out.

a cold one served up & beats by DJ CHOPSTIQS

I got love going out to all the DJ’s bro.. Be looking out for us all.. Soon we will have DJ Honey Bee at Queen Bean “May 29th" spinning the reggae every other Thursday. She will be swinging back and forth from Bacchus to QB on Thursdays.. I haven’t met her yet in person, but its all dialed in. Me, I love Reggea & I plan to go down to Bacchus and get the feel from them and her for Modesto’s favorite monthly magazine. The Modesto View.. Got some Love Heading your way DJ CHOPSTIQS.. But lets speak easy about it for now..
One Love Honey Bee
