High school dress codes causing stir
The Bee is reporting this morning that as temperatures rise, clothing seems to be getting skimpier at local schools. There must have been a serious investigative reporter out on this assignment! Will they send this reporter to the lakes this year to look for swimsuits?
Anyway, apparently school officials are having to work harder (God forbid) to track down and punish the culprits that are violating their almost one year old ban on certain types of clothing that includes tank tops with thin straps, short skirts and sagging pants. Wearing see-through garments, gang-related clothing, low-cut tops and basebal capss will also get you in hot water with the district.
I understand the need for rules in regard to clothing so that students don't get too easily distracted but I also understand that education should be a major priortity in a state that seems to be falling behind rapidly.
One very interesting statistic in The Bee article is that at Davis High School, officials actually utilize a computer database to keep track of clothing offenders. At some point this year, someone was paid not to promote education, but to enter 474 violations into this database. That had to take a decent chunk of time.
Is our education dollar being well spent on this type of enforcement? Are our children getting the type of lessons that they deserve? Let us know your opinion on this topic. We would also love to hear from those that have been busted for breaking local fashion laws.
