Make history by voting in primary election

When voters go to the polls today, it won't be politics as usual. Anything but. Democrats and voters who decline to state their party preferences have a historic choice to make: Will they vote for the first woman with a real chance to win the presidency, or will they cast a ballot for the first politically viable African-American? Hopefully, they'll make their decisions on more substantive issues than gender and race -- such as which one is better suited to lead, inspire and govern the nation. But such historic overtones cannot be ignored.
The Republican Party excluded independents from its primary, where members have an opportunity to vote for a military hero, a Mormon son of a previous presidential contender, an evangelical preacher or a Texas congressman-doctor.
This election, and the one in November, will be dissected by pundits, cited in history books and analyzed by professors. But before others try to interpret our votes, we must cast them. Don't miss an opportunity to make history. Vote.

The Bee's recommendations
In most elections, The Bee editorial board, whose members are identified at the bottom of this page, makes recommendations on candidates and issues. The recommendations -- not always unanimous -- are just that, recommendations. We don't presume to tell people how to vote. But we hope the information we have gathered and the insights we have provided will be useful.
Proposition 91, gasoline taxes -- No. Approval of Proposition 1A last year makes it unnecessary. Even those who drafted the initiative no longer support it. (Published Jan. 18)
Proposition 92, to provide guaranteed funding for community colleges and reduce tuition -- No. We do not need another lock on the state budget. (Published Jan. 13)
Proposition 93, to modify term limits for state legislators -- No. Shortens total time a legislator can spend in office, but lengthens time she or he can spend in a single chamber. Also extends terms of some now in power and does not, as promised, improve the method for drawing districts. (Published Jan. 13)
Propositions 94-97, package regarding Indian casinos -- No on all. Would give four wealthy tribes authority to greatly expand casinos and would not guarantee nearly as much income for state as claimed. (Published Jan. 17)
Stanislaus County Growth Measures -- Yes on E, which would discourage more residential development outside cities. No on L, a weak alternative that spells out procedures for developing a new general plan, which is needed anyway. (Published Jan. 20)
Modesto Measure M, would change the city charter to promote accountability -- Yes. First charter update in 46 years, when Modesto was a city of 36,000. Also provides for an independent auditor, review of compensation for mayor and council members, and greater accountability for city departments. (Published Jan. 24.)
Modesto Measure N, district elections for City Council members -- Yes. Lays out procedures and timetables for Modesto to move from at-large to district elections in choosing City Council members. (Published Jan. 22)
Presidential primaries -- Democrat: Barack Obama. New perspective and personal charisma give him the opportunity to bring the nation together to confront substantial economic and political challenges. Republican: John McCain. Demonstrated integrity and forward-thinking positions on immigration, climate change and budgetary discipline make him the best choice. (Published Jan. 25)
