any comments on this month's art walk, wherever you went

Had a good turnout at State Theatre for Degenerate Art Club and Joelle Maddyson, reports pretty good at Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin, Photographer's Gallery, Anderson's, even first time at Clayton's, and note a few of you got to Nevada Smith over at Lost Art. Did anybody go by Trewin's or Oopsa Daisy, what up at Picasso's...... Deva open tonight for Off the Air, so dark last night, and Commonality pops up after Film Society on Gone with the Wind, but fishing for comments on shows you saw, if you were out on art walk last night..... what did you think, critique the food, the art, the set up, the weather.....suggestions....
also.... if you have a portfolio piece with bicycle in it, or related to bike racing, bikes at all, not sure on bike jocks, may have a show spot for it..... but add some comments. I have to get to Chris Murphy soon, but we were busy at the State, and I didn't get chance to see more than few minutes at Clayton's, Photographer's Gallery or Mistlin to know too much going on, and in the window at Queen Mab's. jim christiansen

art walk wasn't so cold this month

December was colder night than last night. And close to Christmas, we had a pretty good turnout for Joe Barretta, the art demo by Penny Meyer, other artists in the house, though Mistlin gallery closed last month,.... missing a number of the regulars. Cafe Deva closed for this one, but open for Off the Air tomorrow night, and another show this weekend with Commonality.

I left my jacket after solo bass show at Queen Bean last night, knew it would ok weather for art walk, as didn't notice I'd not brought with me until three blocks from home. Real cold going back this morning though, but no fog....thank god it was on the coat rack get that QB shot of expresso to warm up before going home. Had to take to Deb about coffee this morning anyway.

For December, had hot chocolate and the homemade type marshmallows from Claytons, and chocolate chip cookies from Garden of Eatin' new kitchen project for mental health clients employment at Turning Point, where Peter Mah of Minnie's is executive chef consultant, available for catering....quite good chocolate chip cookies. In November, the holiday cookies were by Word of Mouth Bakery.

Clayton's had a full booked party last month when scheduled to open on the art walk, and did open January, and my apologies to Big Earl for not getting his other two pieces down there to go with the basket, was one of those nights. Mitch and Tammy and kids did stop in over at the State Theatre, things went well enough, slow to start, good after 7:30 pm, and served free hot chocolate, and started that have off wine list special with purchase of entree, so next month, we'll likely set up a little sooner in the afternoon, consider dining there early, or at end of art walk, after you stop in on Nev, next door at Lost Art Gallery, as we'll do some overtime as long as some of my stuff showing, as I'll never get there before 9:30 pm to pick up my stuff, as I have to close the State theatre show first. Keena Wells was host artist tonight with Jullie Leftofmuse.com and Big Earl was there, he stopped over at the State.

I am talking to Hannibol over at Barking Dog to get them on next month as their art show changes this month, and Keena may move over to there, its all in how it turns out, but crowds getting larger again, we appreciate the turn out, but if you have pics, comments to make on the art, we're serious, the artists showing our work, the venues displaying the art and putting out some goodies each month, we'd like to hear some reviews, good, bad, etc, so we can ever improve this. YOu readers have commented before, but dropped it last time I posted this forum.

I'm up in five shows this week, that wasn't so uncommon for me before I took this decade off, so this is quite a bit more than I'm producing a show, and trying to grab attention, this is sincere for my fellow artists, we need some input on what we got up, these shows we're doing..... hand it over audience.

the December Art Walk blog I forgot to assemble as so near Christmas.  While we haven't ever been open for Art Walk in December, in many art walks in northern California, December is the big month, so it came as shock to me that Mistlin was closed, and not really for lack of volunteers, as some offered, but the eventful month, with the pulling of the nude photography art that had been juried into the Figuratively Speaking members show, and other things that had more to do with every day life with gallery staff and members, and so close to Christmas, that even Central California Art Association, takes a month off, as did Act of Kindness, Deva in January as new baby in family, and has Off the Air tonight, including some art, so this year around event, does depend on the map, often printed at last minute.  We're working on improving that.

So, here are the pics such as I had them, just a few, that were from the December show, where we got enthusiastic, if bit smaller crowd than we've become accustomed, yet more than some the artists have hung at.  This was month six since we started, January opening number seven for the State Theatre participation on the art walk.

music guests, Joe Barretta and John Ady, doing acoustic, jazz, blues sets.  Joe will be back in June.

Tried our first art demo in the lobby of State Theatre last month.  Artist Keena Wells and Sandy Lynn watching from the back as Penny Meyer paints.  We'll likely do some more demos, at the State and other art walk stops.  December, there was a demo at Simplicita there last night open, and Ken at Chartreuse Muse did one people commented on, Pottery Wheel in a Tux....

Believe this is from the set Elizabeth Ingebretzen left up for us.

Keena Wells next to figure paintings by Penny Meyer, I think, as my camera was having issues with me in photography, and not sure I got the Adrian Mendoza tweaked photo digital art in this set.

My art stuff is on the right, showed at Clayton's this time out in January, was drawn primarily at the October 5th Symphony Association gala after American in Paris at Gallo Center, but the Bean Painting to the left, a walk in from lady from Cuba i can't recall name just now, but all natural mosaic and wish the camera caught this better.  Starting at our second show, Nathan Anderson brought in his portfolio and we posted it on the easels, we've had friends bring in their stuff, and if we have room, we show it.... consider that if you're an artist, coming to art walk at State Theatre, we've been known to do walk ons.

well, Keena Wells did Marilyn and I cut off part of the recent one, and more of mine in back and afraid those of Adrian Mendoza ( he is a photographer, and bill harris drops in every month, should get them to photograph our own shows) didn't turn out, be some of Jason Van Housen's below, he moved to Hawaii this month, with original music guest Rachel Renae who will be returning to sing in March, with our poster assist, Crissie Harris and band members, doing the break set that month.  February, we'll have Jon Valenti our music guest.

seeking advisory from readers, what would you like on art walk

fire eaters??????
antique dealers night on some other thursday????? why not?

actual question the galleries, restaurants, other venues on art walk, those thinking of adding in to it, would like to know.

degenerate art club was a hit, but also allowed us to expand into the theatre.  While we will do the vids and movies once in awhile, film makers been slow to take up our invite to submit to theatre, but here are some other things, people have asked.

art walk began, about four years ago, with Carl Anderson organizing a reception at his gallery, with some other galleries downtown, as artists reception night, get some folks downtown to not so much happening. Besides Mistlin had moved to its location, photographers gallery had sprung up at Camera Center, and so its been.

State Theatre, has had some interest, we have the "dolly" from the hair stylists competition, locally, ask us to show, these are judged, it is an art form.

Still Smoking, is sponsoring commonality, also sells art classic music rock, etc posters, does piercings and tattoos.  Mat subscribes to my blog here, he's an artist.  And I've often done a tour just putting up the State Theatre posters downtown, and shops up McHenry Avenue, often some of the best places to post for music events.  Art is Art, plenty of history in skin art, and we have a two day tattoo show at Centre Plaza, few know about, for last few years.

Queen Mab's is on, so some fashion, Act of Kindness, primarily gift shop and reiki boutique, gems, crystals, etc, but some gallery.  Oopsa Daisy floral added, floral arrangements are art, they also do photography for weddings on site, and off, so always need photographers.  Why not add the bead shop.

Dewz, Clayton's, Tresetti's, Barking Dog, do have art on the walls on consignment, or for display and for sale, like DEVA does.  Mistlin has art jewelry, so if you're downtown, your favorite spot hits an idea they should be on the art walk to you, open during Third Thursday, 5 to 9 pm, let them know. I'm going to bring this up, but as yet, there is no actual real committee to do this, it just happens.

I'll add this on to the modestofamous blog forum on suggestions, nobody else comments to, but add yours here, or there, or tell art walk galleries, etc, what you'd like to see.  I'm one of the artists, but I love art, all kinds.

Film society members, of age near my mom's were really into the MAMA vids last month, something some would be surprised at, as few younger viewers came in to see them, by Aaron Durr, Solar Powered People, etc..... these older folks were into them......

its an all ages, free, anyone gets to show up, welcome, we want you to see art, experience art, check it out, see if you can get in to show your own art off, models welcome too, I handed the posters, act of kindness newsletter to one of our favorite life drawing models, let her know where herself in art is going to hang.

We want to add more demonstrations, pottery wheel in the tux by Ken Jensen at Chartreuse Muse last month was great from what people told me.  I don't get to get out and see as much, producing a show.

Ruben had this thing, where motown mojo goes and does somebody's job, so asked him if he'd sit for portrait as our friend Kiera has, in public first, see we into painting ruben's face....after all he lost my bar napkin drawing of him from Fat Cat night..... before we asked Jack if can do the life drawing sessions...which we don't do on art walk.....

but I've drawn Chris Murphy, several music friends, so we'll ask them to sit, maybe you public audience also..... we need something to paint or draw.

my brother, sue richardson manager of the state, me, other poet friends into art, or both, want to invite freestyle poet slamming, haiku battlement around the art, so why not invite Slam on Rye our Poet Laureate, as we do poetry readings at Mistlin and Clix has done that at their spot on Carpenter.

and public murals, model mentioned that today, Manteca has this public mural society, ambitious plan to paint 40 murals in Manteca in next ten years, wouldn't that also look cool in Modesto.....

so, will bulletin now, post elsewhere, see if more suggestions come in, and tell us how we might show your work, I don't have to use tables, or easels all the time, its just what was needed, when available, etc..

jim

ever wanting to improve our production, our shows, show more art, get others out to see it, do it, bring it on.

art demo of an art demo

blurry photo as loaded off camera into photoshop on jim's laptop

brightening worked a bit, still......

added glow, gray gradient, outline, fuzzed a bit, seems to be finished to me.

Invert of "finished" product, also seems pretty cool for me, as I rarely mess with photoshop stuff.

This is still Penny Meyer doing the art demo, but not same day, I didn't photoshop out the State theatre, its not December, but today, January 20, at Centre Plaza.  Art Demos seem to draw a crowd, and Penny did one for us at State, here at Commonality, and maybe doing more with various spots on the art walk, as we're likely out there encouraging artists to do that, and you can watch it too.

Fire eaters, that's

Fire eaters, that's interesting. Still, I think I prefer to go to the circus to see them so I'll just request more great art work.

fire eating diet and art

I think closest we had to fire eaters, solo bassists and art on stage with bomb shell sculpture at State Theatre.

Getting more good art out a priority. Some spots not seeing art walk patrons in, Gypsy, Oopsa Daisy Floral and the show at Trewin of WWII imagery and items, 2 day only.

Will see if anyone paints with fire, announce hear later, for flood repair
