Support local business and laugh at me!

I was at Clix Cafe on Coffee Road a while back and I could not help but notice how hard the lady behind the counter was working. In between serving drinks and making salads I had a chance to talk to her for a few minutes and I found out that she was the owner of the business.

Clix is a family-owned business ran by Robin, her children and her husband. The cafe features a great menu, but the most unique feature of the business is the corner full of computers. Clix has 20 computers that (for a nominal fee) customers can use for gaming and surfing he internet. On occasion, the cafe holds all-night sessions for gamers and I love the idea that Robin and family do what they can to give local youth something positive to do.

As I was talking to Robin an idea popped into my head. I thought that maybe I could help her out a bit and at the same time get an idea what really goes into a family business struggling to stay afloat in the midst of massive corporate giants like Starbucks. So, I made a deal with Robin and I would like to make that same deal with other locally owned businesses if possible.

I will work at her cafe and giver her a much needed helping hand (labor is expensive) if she lets me chronicle the adventure here on Modesto Famous. I am really interested to see how a local business makes it and stays strong and I have a feeling that I will learn a great deal. So, join me this Wednesday at Clix Cafe at 1442 North Carpenter Road. I will be there making sandwiches, cleaning tables and serving customers between 10 am and 2 pm. I guarantee that you will get a great lunch at a great price and a crazy guy to laugh at.

If you own a local business and want to challenge me to wear your shoes for a while, email me at modestofamous@gmail.com. I am open to all challenges. Show me how tough a business owner has to be in this area to keep their head above water.

I hope to see you Wednesday. What on Earth have I gotten myself into this time?
