I am pretty sure that I lost a portion of my hearing tonight. I may have also suffered some whiplash. In addition to those injuries, I was almost killed when (like an idiot) I walked into the middle of a mosh pit and a man that had to weigh at least 400 pounds decided that I would make a great ping pong ball.
In order to broaden my musical horizon’s a bit, I spent the evening at the Fat Cat listening to Static-X and other Metal mayhem makers. Now, I will admit that I was not a Metal fan before this concert, but I really enjoyed this. I had no clue what any of the singers were singing but I really admired how all of the bands worked together.
But what I enjoyed most was the atmosphere. I learned for instance that Metal fans seem to have developed their own language based on a series of growls, hand gestures and grunts. For instance, when someone approaches you, thrusts up the devil horn sign with his fingers, grunts a few times and then growls something that is pretty well incomprehensible, he is really trying to say something like, “Dude, you are sticking out like a sore thumb! Bang your head and join in on some growling and you will fit right in!
I took the advice, filled myself up on Red Bull, got really into the music and ended up realizing that I would totally try this again some day. Also, if you like Metal, check out the band, Seip from Riverbank. These guys were ferocious and worked the crowd into a heated frenzy before the headliners were anywhere near the stage. I talked to their manager tonight and I hope to get an interview with the band soon.
If you attended this show let me know what you thought of it. Also, is it me or does the lead singer/screamer/growler of Static-X look like Ben Affleck with insane facial hair and an even more insane crop of hair growing at least two feet off of his scalp?
I guess it is official now! I am a Metal fan! I will be growling around the house at the Chihuahua and practicing my head banging for the next big show. This was seriously a really fun event! I have to give a big thanks to the crew at the Fat Cat (especially Chris Ricci and Lin) for giving me the opportunity to check this out and making the night extra cool.
