I want but modesto wont sell

I want to buy a home but the home I want to buy doesn't exist in Modesto and the community I want to live in doesn't either

• I don't want to live in a shoddily built track home surrounded by SUV owning wannabe cowboys with screaming brats and soccer moms and the must of a car ride to get a carton of milk.

• I don't want to live a pretentious 40 year old craftsman where you pay a premium for a 40 year old tree on your street that you have no right to prune.

• I don't want to live in some sort of gang killing field where the city refuses to provide basic services like street lights and police protection.

I'm a young professional that has lived in urban areas and loved it.

So downtown then? Where? In the squalled rentals catering to illegal immigrants and crack heads?

I want a condo, a studio, a loft or a high rise..

I want to park on Friday and not have to drive until Monday.

I want to walk out of my downtown loft to the local Trader Joes or Whole Foods for my carton of organic milk.

I want to enjoy midnight movies, live comedy, great local coffee shops, book stores, unique eateries open past 9, art galleries and all that can be considered culture.

I want a community... but it does not exist.

What is there? Why doesn't it exist?

There is no sense of community in our downtown but what could we do?

Construct mixed use buildings up and down J street with first story retail and apartments above. Remodel Rosten towers and scrape out the old people smell. Build a green shopping complex with some of those stores mentioned before. Have the police stop scarring away the good clientele of downtown business and encouraging them to come. Nurture the established tax base that was just talked about in the bee to make this happen!!!

then I can truly plant roots in Modesto instead of renting a home that is nothing more then the best choice among lessors ones.

Sounds like you want to live

Sounds like you want to live in San Diego not Modesto.

Or maybe.....

You can probably find that in Ripon. No too many churches, how about downtown Stockton, no, too many gangs. Oh, I got it, Under the Sea with Sebastian the crab or lobster, whatever the hell he was. Banta, you won't need your car in Banta, but they don't have a Starbucks. Good luck man, this is harder than I thought.

If you have love...

You can live anywhere.

Modesto is growing. There's a blossoming art community and there is stuff to do.

Check out the queen bean.

first response didn't

first response didn't take...

but I want to know what tool you use to "scrape out the old people smell?"

The stuff you want is happening too... and I want that sort of community but I would probably try to get a carton of soy milk.

Maybe we could figure out a way for the restaurants to stay open past 9 or even open on Sundays and Mondays... take some biz away from all the Chains by the mall?

Just around the Corner

Condos are coming downtown soon.
We want biz in all parts of Mo Town so all existing neighborhoods/residents can enjoy a revitilized market and completion of their neighborhood ammenities originally promised to them in the booming market(ie parks, schools, shopping).

Meanwhile the Council and Planning dept. should advocate centralized growth and upwards development. A better transportation agenda should be just as important as parking discussions were in last night's council mtg. This will attract the next demographics of home buyers to Modesto for affordable living in California. As the new generation of homeowners will be telecommuters not road commuters.

To continue the City's show of support of diverse cultures, in spite of bad pr with revoking of Sin City's dance permit... the City should support marketing and publicity for "Cultural" events such as Multi-Cultural festival (just past). Or make appearances at the Greek Festival, Chinese New Year celebration, etc... Or just better PR in this direction. I think this will change with district voting also just around the corner.
