Rustler's Moon with Kathy Kallick & Bill Evans
Event details: Kathy Kallick and Bill Evans have played together many times in recent
years, and both have been making important contributions to bluegrass
since the 1970s. They've toured the country and the world with their
music, collaborated with some of the top contemporary acoustic musicians,
have an obvious reverence for traditional bluegrass but have recorded a
number of their own compositions, and have never forgotten to have fun
playing this music.
Rustler's Moon reflects Kathy and Bill's mixture of reverence for
traditional bluegrass and their skill at creating distinctive originals,
not to mention their infectious ability to have a whole lot of fun with
the music. With a repertoire comprised of tunes from their previous
bands, plus plenty of new pieces, Rustler's Moon promises a multifaceted
evening of music reaching back into the past and forward into the future
of bluegrass.
Kathy Kallick (guitar, vocals) has been among the elite of contemporary
songwriters and singers since co-founding with Laurie Lewis the
internationally-acclaimed band, Good Ol' Persons, in 1975. She's also
a rock-solid guitarist and in-demand teacher. In 2001, she received a
"Lifetime Achievement Award" from the California Bluegrass Association
for all her contributions. Kathy has released 14 albums, which include
more than 100 of her original compositions and arrangements, and been
on countless compilations. Both of her releases with The Kathy Kallick
Band - Walkin' In My Shoes and Warmer Kind Of Blue - enjoyed substantial
success on the bluegrass charts.
Bill Evans (banjo, vocals) enjoys a reputation not only as one of
bluegrass' most skilled players, at home with both traditional and
progressive styles, but also as a world-renowned teacher and composer.
His 1995 Rounder CD, Native and Fine, was awarded an honorable mention for Instrumental Recording of the Year by NAIRD (National Association of
Independent Record Distributors), and his 2001 CD, Bill Evans Plays Banjo, was on many "Best of" lists. His instrumental and arranging talents have graced the work of such bands as Dry Branch Fire Squad, Bluegrass Intentions, and Due West. Bill is currently writing "Banjo for Dummies" for Wiley Publishing.
Tom Bekeny (mandolin, fiddle, vocals) has been a member of The Kathy
Kallick Band for the past 10 years, and with High Country for more than
15 years, touring widely and recording several albums with both bands.
He's a co-founder of Done Gone and Tenbrooks, an early member of Laurie
Lewis' Grant Street String Band, and is featured on the Kathy/Laurie
Rounder album, Together.
Cindy Browne, acoustic bassist, has more than 30 years experience as a
touring and recording musician and teacher, playing a variety of styles
that range from jazz to classical to ethnic folk to bluegrass. She has
accompanied the likes of Mel Torme, Bob Hope, and Phyllis Diller, but
is probably better known for her recent work with Due West and Bill
Evans' String Summit, as well as The Webster Sisters with Scott Nygaard,
Kaila Flexer's Next Village, Wake The Dead, Mimi Fox, and Kathy Kallick's
Reason and Rhyme.
Rustler's Moon promises an evening of stellar music that's based in
traditional bluegrass, spiced up with what they term "some interesting
wrinkles."
