A note from The Bee about ModestoFamous.com

Please allow me to introduce myself – I am Eric Johnston, Vice President of Interactive Media at The Modesto Bee. Over the last few weeks there has been a considerable amount of speculation over The Bee’s role in the operation of the ModestoFamous.com site; hopefully I can answer some of those questions here.

Q: So, why hasn’t The Bee done more – or anything – with the site?
A: The answer comes down to one person – me. As you are no doubt aware, ModestoFamous.com was part of The Fresno Bee’s purchase of FresnoFamous.com.

Without airing too much dirty laundry, the acquisition came as a bit of a surprise to us in Modesto, and at a pretty challenging time. A strategic internal reorganization The Bee has limited the immediate resources I have to attend to ModestoFamous.com.

The second piece is the technology. We are still trying to get our arms around the technology that drives the ModestoFamous.com site. Any owner of a new car wants to pop the hood and check out the engine – as yet we are still working to get the latch released.

The third is money. I have a budget for every dollar of company money that I spend. We are working to find a way to cover some of the unexpected costs of the ModestoFamous.com operation. Some may say the dollars are small, but it is my responsibility to be a good steward of our company resources regardless the amount.

Q: What is to become of ModestoFamous.com?
A: I am not sure I am the one who answers that question; the spirit of ModestoFamous.com would suggest that this community help figure that out. We will do our best to provide a stable, intuitive environment for the community, but will look to the community for your input.

Q: What about Motown Mojo?
A: Mojo, or Ruben, has been a great resource for the ModestoFamous.com site for quite a while. He and I have met, and I very much enjoyed our conversation. While I can’t share the exact details of our discussion, I do hope that he is willing to continue to contribute to the site. His passion for our community and for the ModestoFamous.com site are clear, and his voice is an important one.

Q: What is your timeline?
A: Honestly? I don’t have one yet. We are still working with our colleagues at The Fresno Bee and with the current site hosts, to figure out some back-end technical stuff. As noted earlier, I am also still working to smooth some internal issues resulting from our recent reorganization.

You probably have more questions, and it is likely that the responses above have created a few more. I would welcome you to post any questions here, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. If you prefer a more personal dialogue, feel free to send an e-mail to ejohnston@modbee.com.

Thanks for your ongoing participation in the ModestoFamous.com site, and for your patience through this challenging time.

Eric Johnston

Vice President, Interactive Media
The Modesto Bee

Sorry about that

Good afternoon,

Sorry about there not being a comment feature on the blog - some weird tech thing had to be fixed.

Comment away.

Eric

Go Read...

Some 'wierd tech thing that had to be fixed?' Funny that no other person/poster/commentor, since the start of the site, has had that same problem.

How'd you fix it? Finally get around to 'popping that hood' you said needed unlatching?

Go read ALL the comments you already have that can't be moved over here. It's not looking to good for you here Eric:

I sent Eric an email the other day

I noticed the add comment thing was missing, sent eric an email, he sent a couple back.

I suggested he contact Mojo for directions on that. Eric, this is part of that comment thing I noted.

Anyway, I see Mojo got you fixed up.

The myspace part of the networking is true of FresnoFamous.com too, as it is here.

See, Mojo sent out this cool bulletin, that lets you get from myspace bulletin by modestofamous, complete with cool gif, yelling guy logo version, that links into the blog here, where I noticed the add comments thing is working again.

as I mentioned the html from myspace often use the editor to enter html from bulletins there to here, how we readers and bloggers sometimes bypass photo jpg upload to install cool graphics by others, or even us in the arts.

I presume the Bee immediately opened a myspace account to become a friend of Modestofamous.com as I know some staffers were on as friends before the Bee bought the site.

You do know Tiki, Mustang Club, Fat Cat, Queen Bean, Fez Cafe, Off the Air, among others have myspace accounts too, likely blog elsewhere as well. Haven't seen a McClatchy Corp or Modesto Bee myspace account. 76 per cent of Rupert Murdoch's myspace subscribers and users happen to be over 18. Maybe the Bee could update some of its reporting that its only for 14 year olds. Anyway, Bee should listen to Mojo.

Hi Ruben,

I emailed eric, noted the comments spot wasn't working on the original
I'd blog, but haven't had much news of late, and did put in a pitch for the banter, comments, etc that make the site work.

So, feel free to comment that the modestofamous.com myspace site, is a big part of the networking package, that many of us comment back, see it,

The Bee shouldn't think of this as the Hive, which I rarely use. jim

I am writing this message because ModestoFamous.com seriously needs your help. As you may know, we were purchased by the Modesto Bee and ever since then, the site has suffered. Currently it is not updated and I am sorry about that but I have been unable to reach an agreement with the Bee that will allow me to properly manage the site.

So many of you have been with us from the start and we want to always be the one place that you go to promote your band, speak your mind and share event listings. We honestly love this community and really want to make this work for you!

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Click our logo below and you will be directed to a blog written by Bee management. Feel free to email him with your concerns at the address in the blog entry. Also, leave a comment (no account necessary) and let him know how you feel.

Are we going to let another big corporation steal what we love? I don’t plan on going down without a fight. Please help us fight!

More site changes from the Bee

Most likely in an effort to help battle spam and control content, The Modesto Bee now requires that ModestoFamous.com users login or register an account to leave comments. This was tried when the site first started up and was a miserable failure. I hope that people don't mind the couple of seconds that this takes.

Mojo

bullshit...

...enough said.

Bullshit or not.....

Ok guys, I have been pretty hard on the the Bee here...because they deserve it. But, I have to give credit where credit is due.
No matter how they did it, The Bee (or Eric) got rid of the spam which is something that was bothering many of us and was asked of them. What they don't know is that the spam didn't just pop up one day after they bought us. It’s been here damn near since the site started and Mojo got up every morning at the crack of dawn and deleted them all one by one to keep the site clean and have no log-ins required because he knows what the people want.

I really don't think Eric truly knows all the things Mojo did here. Mojo made this site a full-time job, willingly with very little in return.

About Logging-in; Guys, look back at dozens of threads here and how many times we, with accounts, have told the assholes here to stop being cowardly and log-in, or 'put a name to their words.' You can't be too hard on the Bee when we've asked for this, even indirectly.
But - what people/readers/bloggers need to figure out is that logging in doesn't mean you're not still anonymous!

One day while I was promoting the site downtown I was speaking to a man and his wife telling them all about Modesto Famous. His wife was very excited. She said, "my husband works for the city and there are so many times he'd love to tell people what's 'really' going on and vent a little, but he'd probably lose his job."
My response: "That's the plus side to us having anonymous accounts. You guys should really check out the site, I'm sure your husband has plenty of insight that Modestans deserve to know."

Now, I don't know if they ever post here or not, but I can understand the occasional need to not be so honest about who you are here. But, have you ever tried to set up an account? It doesn't ask for any personal information. It asks for a name....not necessarily 'yours.' You can come here and be "ipickmynoseandeatmyboogers."
No one will know it's you unless you walk up to them on the street and tell them.

You create your own password, and you only put in a personal email address so that the site can notify you of anyone commenting on your posts that you might want to check back on, and so the site can also re-email you your password if you forget it. It's NOT so fellow readers here can start to contact you personally - you get a free private modestfamous.com inbox for that!

The last plus, is that if you have a log-in and some person likes your comment or opinion on a topic, they can click on your log-in name and read other things you've written before. That's how we get return readers! That can't happen with Famous Guests' accounts.
So, before the 'Eric Bashing' starts today, take a little time to see both sides of the fence here. He and the Bee deserve bashing for too many other reasons.
