Immigration bill sparks student protests

In many schools across the state yesterday students walked out of class in protest of HR4437, the Border Protection, Anti-Terrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005.

Modesto protest has been small thus far but could get larger as the legislation gets closer to being passed. According to The Modesto Bee, Modesto High School Principal Melda Gaskins said a group of about 60 students said they would like to hold a forum today during lunch. Informed students would explain the legislation to other students to promote better understanding.

This is obviously a major issue in California based on the fact that we have a very large Latino population and that population makes up a great deal of our workforce.

If you know of any protests being planned let us know. If you are looking for a place to speak your mind on this issue or any other issue, feel free to use our site.

A list of the major provisions of HR4437 can be found here.

Immigration...

What are they protesting about it? I am not familiar with the bill so I don't have an opinion yet.

Protest

They are protesting legislation that dramatically changes the way that immigrants are treated in the U.S. The link in the article will give you a complete listing of what the law will do.

Link...

Do you have a link to the actual law? The link you posted appears to be from a group that opposes the law. The website that you listed says "These represent a few of the most egregious provisions of H.R. 4437." I would like some perspective on the law without bias from either side of the argument.

Illegal immigration is a good thing and a bad thing in our country. It certainly helps us economically and culturally. Having pourous borders can be dangerous though with the whole terrorism thing.

There has to be a happy medium in there somewhere...

Sad government, the founding fathers are crying

We need to deport the politicians, and open the borders (and our minds). How do we say no to people who make $3/day in their country of origin. How do we consume and have it all and tell others that they can't also have their fair share. People want to come here to work in order to support their families and to have hope of a better future, the same reasons that brought the ancestors of our nations leaders to America. Open the borders... it will solve all of our problems... By the way, illegal immigrants contribute to social security and rarely get any of those dollars back. Immigrants in california are keeping the agriculture industry alive. No immigrants, no agriculture, no california economy. I don't mean this to say that if you are an immigrant that the only job you should get should be picking fruits and veg. for the rest of us. The reality is, is that this is where most immigrants get a start and after that I would hope that they and their children would have the same opportunities as the rest of us.

What we are protesting about

We are protesting against HR 4437 and all other racist legislation. HR 4437 will turn police into immigration officers. It will criminalize so-called illegals, making it a felony to be in this country without papers. It also criminalizes anybody who has any relationship with an undocumented person, including but not limited to family, friends, and employers. They want to build Nazi-style concentration camps for people caught attempting to cross the border. If the bill passed a wall would be built along the Mexico-US border, while nothing would be done at the Canadian border, despite the fact that millions of illegals entered the country from Canada. This is a concise list of the reasons why we are protesting.

Anybody who wants to protest against this racist bill, join us on Monday, May 1 at 8:00 AM on Crows Landing Road between Hatch Road and Whitmore. We will be protesting all day!

I forgot to mention...

If the law were truly about terrorism, why are they building a wall at the Mexican border and none up north? Approximately twice as many Middle Easterners (where the government claims most terrorists reside) enter the country through the Canadian border. They have admitted that it has nothing to do with terrorism, but with the changing 'culture' of the southwest. It is a direct assault on Mexicans and Central Americans.
