MAMAs prove to be exciting and memorable
The Modesto Area Music Awards took over the State Theatre Thursday night
and celebrated the best of local music with seven live performances and
a wild mix of other unforgettable events and surprises.
According to co-founders Chris Murphy and Chris Ricci, the 11 awards
that made up the event were voted on by over 6,000 music fans in 13
countries with popular networking site, MySpace, having a major impact
on the number of votes cast. Official numbers indicate that that the
vote count has doubled in just the past two years. The event has been
held annually for the past seven years.
Acting as Emcee was Modesto's official Poet Laureate, Sam Pierstorff who
did an incredible job keeping the evening moving with a hilarious
opening poem and a smattering of jokes throughout the night.
Over the course of the evening Pierstorff managed to poke fun at
everything from The Black Crowe's cancellation of Chris Ricci's
Downtown Rocks event - "Who needs Black Crowes? We have magpies!" to
Arron Durr's hilarious video cover of rapper Ludacris' hit song,
"Rollout" - "Was that hyphy? Was that what all the fuss was about?"
As entertaining as he was however, Pierstorff was upstaged by masterful
performances by local artists of just about every genre imaginable.
Event highlights included a string-infused collaboration with a
distinctly Bluegrass feel between The Dave Hanley Band who was
nominated in the Unplugged category, and Fat Skeleton who took home the
Indie/Alternative award, and an ear drum shattering and awe-inspiring
cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" by Merced-based metal group,
Stigmurder. A two song set by P3 (pop-rock, pop-punk, power-pop)
category winners, The Evening News also proved to be a crowd favorite
based on the enthusiastic applause that followed even after the band
left the stage.
The lifetime achievement award of the evening went to Max and Donna
Miller who worked for a total of 16 years with B93.1 FM before leaving
this past summer for Sacramento. The Miller's were honored for
bringing a number of big acts to the Modesto area and for being
instrumental in the careers of bands such as Flying Blind who had two
members on hand to present the award.
Critics of the current Modesto area radio market have been very open in
crediting The Miller's for their work directly with the community while
at the same time being sharply opposed to the changes that large
corporations such as Clear Channel, the current owner of B93.1 FM have
made to the market.
Overall the invite-only crowd that consisted of local politicians,
business people and the family and friends of nominated artists seemed
very impressed with the event.
Clark Begg's of The Evening News summed up the show well in a phone
interview from the road this morning (they are on their way to play shows
in San Diego, Santa Monica and Los Angeles) by saying, "Some people
don't take The MAMAs seriously. We consider our win to be a great
honor and an affirmation that we are appreciated for doing what we do.
This win will always be considered a milestone in our careers. We will
not be the type of artists that do not proudly say that they are from
the hometown that they are from. We appreciate Modesto and are proud
to be able to represent our hometown."
