Quilt Party Bring your old t-shirts and sew them to everyone else's old t-shirts. If everyone does this we will all be a part of something really neat. It does not matter how big or successful this turns out to be. Rather, the point is to have fun with people in the community. Stitching isn't hard. It took me a few minutes to learn it and get into a zen like state where time flew by, and 20 minutes later I had finished the first stitching of two shirts into one. If a bunch of people spent a couple hours doing this, I'd imagine they could build something really neat that they could be proud to be a part of. » read more

Ramana Vieira is the New Voice of Portuguese World Music. "An Evening of Fado Music: Then And Now" features the intoxicating and electrifying vocals of this Bay Area fado artist backed by the Bay Area’s finest musicians: Didier Bouvet on lead guitar, Jeffrey Luiz on classical guitar, Benito Cortez on violin, Alberto Ramirez on bass, and Stephen La Porta on percussion. Ramana Vieira and her ensemble recently received a standing ovation at their last sold out show in Marin, CA. Fado originated in Portugal in the early 19th century, blending Arabic and Brazilian influence with the traditional music of Portuguese sailors. The tunes and lyrics of the fado convey a complex mixture of sadness, pain, nostalgia, happiness, and love. The essential element of fado music is saudade, a Portuguese word that translates roughly as longing, or nostalgia for unrealized dreams. Fado flowers from this fatalistic world view. It speaks of an undefined yearning that cannot be satisfied. The daughter of Portuguese immigrants, Ramana Vieira was born and raised in the Bay Area. Like many children of immigrants, she grew up not knowing much about her ancestral culture. In her late 20s, she began intensive training in Portuguese and learned to sing fado. She had found her cultural identity. "It’s in my soul. It’s my passion to sing this music," Vieira says. She received her formal voice and acting training at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. She has shared the stage with world-renowned fadista Mariza in a standing-room-only concert in California, and has been invited back five times to perform at the Lisbon Festival in the Bay Area. » read more
