 When you see twenty-seven year old April Verch perform, the first thing that strikes you is the pure energy that infuses her fiddle playing and step dancing. Verch is a virtuoso fiddler who has won big-time awards and earned some respect. But being a champion fiddler doesn't mean you can write good songs. Thankfully, April Verch is multi-talented, and her latest CD "Take Me Back" showcases her knack for writing tight, melodic little country/roots ditties that'll have you convinced she's from Nashville and not the Ottawa Valley (Canada). April's tune "Tom, Brad & Alice" was awarded 2nd place in the instrumental category of the 2005 International Songwriting Competition. Almost 15,000 professional and amateur songwriters from 82 countries entered the competition! April Verch is perhaps everything you want in a fiddler-singer-dancer. It's always been a sad day when something that you knew was a good thing has gone and disappeared. As of now, that thing that is gone is the Harlotfest as you knew it. Created by two players from the Stanislaus Rugby Football Club, Scott McDonald and Miles Hunter back in 1991, this year would have been the 15th birthday of this unique event. The Harlotfest gave rugby players across the nation, and even around the world, a new way to attend tournaments and play rugby. Ruggers know that playing for another team during a tournament is called whoring, but in a good way. We can't pick an exact point in time when this practice began but we gave the rugby whore his/her own tournament. That tournament happens every third weekend in October, this year on the 21st.

A full-size replica engine of the famous character created in the original book by Watty Piper is coming to the Sierra Railroad Dinner Train with 35-45 min train rides and they will read the book during the trip, characters from the book, live musical entertainment, a toy store, children's activities such as face-painting, bouncy houses, bubbles, all included in the $15 price per person.
