Comedy Show Help
The Bee is writing a story about where to see comedy in the area. I wanted to get your feedback on places that host regular stand-up shows. I already have the Fat Cat and Sidelines, but I wanted to include as many venues as possible. Let me know. I need the information by early next week (July 31) at the latest. Thanks!
Welcome to your new Scene

Welcome to your new and improved Scene. Snazzy, no? We’ve doubled the section’s size and added some (hopefully) exciting new features. They include the new Modesto Famous page (where we pull pictures and information off your posts here to run in the paper), The Beat (a local band/musician of the week profile), Let’s Eat (a dining and restaurant guide) and a night life calendar (including concerts, DJs and karaoke). You will also find us free around town, so pick up a copy and see what the Scene has to offer. Hope you like it.
Dave Letterman's Modesto Shout Out
Modesto's own Greg Edwards (Off the Air creator extraordinaire) called me from New York this afternoon to say that Modesto and The Bee gets mentioned on tonight's Late Show with David Letterman. Dave name drops the area in reference to a Bee article on Oakdale's Testicle Festival. So tune in (it airs tonight at 11 p.m. on CBS). More details here.
Scene excerpts and goodies:
First, check out my Scene Stealers column this week where I give mad love to Off the Air and its creator Greg Edwards for the monthly music series’ two-year anniversary. Plus, check out the back-to-back OTA shows Wednesday and Thursday. I’ve been listening non-stop to Great Northern. That show is going to rock.
Second, check out this week’s posts on my blog SceneIt. The big news: Morrissey, the king of moody, melancholy rock is coming to Stockton’s Bob Hope Theatre April 27.
Third, don’t forget to check out Modesto resident Mike Glad’s Oscar-nominated short film “Recycled Life (as well as the other three nominees) Sunday at State Theatre.
Finally, don’t forget, you can still sign on to be one of The Bee’s guest American Idol judges for an interactive online feature we’re planning to start next week. You decide whether you’re a Simon, Randy or Paula. If you’re interested email me at mrowland@modbee.com
Have a great weekend, all.
Want to be The Bee’s Simon, Randy or Paula?
Hey, “American Idol fanatics, we’re looking for some die-hard fans to help us judge the “AI contestants on a weekly basis for a new, interactive online feature we’re planning at www.modbee.com. Can you out snap Simon? Are you one of Randy’s dawgs? Do you appear heavily medicated like Paula? OK, wait, never mind that last bit.
If you are interested, we would use you on a revolving basis with other local judges to give your commentary on the “American Idol performers Tuesday night until the May finale. Please contact me, Bee entertainment writer Marijke Rowland, at mrowland@modbee.com or 578-2284.
best,
Marijke

On Vacation Oct. 12-Oct. 30
I will be on vacation and out of the office Oct. 12-Oct. 30. If you need to contact The Bee during that time, call Scene Editor Pat Clark at 578-2312 or email her at pclark@modbee.com. Otherwise, you can catch me back in the office Monday Oct. 30. My work email will, undoubtedly, shut down due to mailbox size limitations during this time. So please hold-off sending emails until after I return. Have a great October, all.
