Mariachi Vargas at the Stanislaus County Fair

Mariachi Vargas
Sunday, Aug 3, 2008, at 8:30 p.m.
Budweiser Variety Free Stage
Hosted by Radio LOBO 98.7

I think it is so important to know about your heritage and as much as I like change I think traditions should be respected and not forgotten. The band Mariachi Vargas started over 110 years ago and is still going strong. They have appeared in over 200 movies in their career! You can guess that the members have changed over the years, but their big brass sound withstands the test of time. I think it all goes back to staying true to your roots. Despite the changing times Mariachi Vargas has not drastically altered their sound and that is what makes them unique.
I’ll see you at the Fair on closing Sunday. I’ll be the woman in the green fair shirt cheering on the band of time!
Peace- Jenn

PS- Concert is free with Fair admission- go to www.stancofair.com/ticketinfo.html to get discounted Fair admission tickets!

Sawyer Brown at the Stanislaus County Fair

Sawyer Brown
Sunday, July 27, 8:30 p.m.
Budweiser Variety Free Stage
Hosted by KAT Country 103

I love great country music. Once I connected the name Sawyer Brown to familiar songs that I love I was more than excited that they were coming to our Fair! I love their version of “Keep Your Hands to Yourself; it makes me want to get up and dance! They have such a wide range of music ranging from the inspirational “They Don’t Understand to the fun loving “Some Girls Do. This is going to be such a good down home night; grab a corn-on-the-cob, sit in the shade and listen to some great country music- what could be better?

Come on down for some good ol’ country fun with Sawyer Brown! It’s free with Fair admission- what have you got to lose? As Sawyer Brown’s chorus goes ‘Some girls’ may not like ‘em- but this girl sure does! See ya at the Fair!

Peace, Jenn

Tickets go on Sale Saturday.... and I rode a mechanical bull!!!!

In the spirit of the Stanislaus County Fair’s motorsports and bull riding tickets going on sale this Saturday, we visited opening day of the Spring Fair in Los Banos yesterday.
As we were strolling their beautiful fairgrounds, there he was—a mechanical bull in my midst.
I paused. I pondered. And then I decided to take it upon myself to follow up on a previous blog and attempt a wild ride on a mechanical bull. I knew deep down in my heart I was hardcore enough, so I did it. I signed the bull master’s little release form, climbed on and held on tight! I was surprised at how long I was able to stay on; there are pictures and a video to come.
Even more exhilarating will be the real deal—the Humpz and Hornz bull riding event is coming to the Stanislaus County Fair. You’ll want to buy your tickets early to snag the best reserved seats.
So, here’s my reminder to you...Stanislaus County Fair FoodMaxx Arena event tickets go on sale THIS Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m.

Raven-Symone / Stanislaus County Fair

Kid’s Free Night at the Stanislaus County Fair is going to be “so Raven.?

Raven-Symoné
in concert
Stanislaus County Fair
Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 8:30 p.m.
Presented by Monster Energy
Hosted by KHOP 95-1
All concerts included with the price of Fair admission

When my Mom was in school, one of her favorite TV shows was “The Cosby Show.? The Cosby kids are super cute!
When I was in late elementary and junior high school I used to watch the Disney channel after school with my sister. We each had our favorite shows and we sometimes argued over which one to watch. One we always agreed on was “That’s So Raven.? The exaggerated humor and silly situations always made us laugh.
Funny thing is, it was different TV shows that my Mom and I watched, but the same star—Raven-Symoné. Raven was the little Olivia Kendall on the Cosby Show. Years later, she’s Raven- Symoné on “That’s So Raven.?
I’ve grown up and so has Raven. She’s become an accomplished singer and I became Miss Stanislaus County in 2007. She’s going to be at the Stanislaus County Fair—we’ll both be there. She’ll be performing one of the biggest concerts of the 10-day run. As for me, I’ll be working inside the Media Center assisting all those TV and newspaper reporters that come to cover her concert.
Raven’s concert is the same night as our Kid’s Free Night—all kids 12 and under will be admitted free that night! So, have your parents turn off those Cosby Show reruns and join you at the Stanislaus County Fair on July 31. Catch Raven- Symoné in concert and bring the whole family!

NEW Humpz and Hornz Bull Riding event at the Fair!

Humpz and Hornz Bull Riding

Sunday July 27, 7 p.m.
FoodMaxx Arena
Hosted by KAT Country 103

I am so stoked to have this new event at the Stanislaus County Fair! I have never seen bull riding, except for in the movies so I had my co-worker explain it to me. There are two judges that score the rider and the bull. When/ if the rider stays on the bull for 8 seconds he/she receives a score from both judges, added together then divided by two for the total. The bull rider that scores the highest, up to 100 points, wins the competition. There is no saddle and the bull rider must ride holding on to a bull rope with one hand. The rider is disqualified if he/she touches his/her body or the bull during the 8 seconds.
I don’t know about you but I want to go try riding a mechanical bull now. Although I would never consider riding a real bull, a mechanical bull might be fun. Who’s with me?

Later ya’ll,
Jenn

Clay Walker

Clay Walker
is opening up the 10 days of the Fair!

Friday, July 25, 2008, at 8:30 p.m.
Budweiser Variety Free Stage
Presented by Band Against MS
Hosted by KAT Country 103

In the process of sending out these concert announcements I have read some information on each of the artists and I was personally inspired by the story of Clay Walker. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 10 years ago and is still touring and living his successful career.
Many people don’t realize the pain and exhaustion that auto immune diseases bring, along with a doctor’s sigh and short life expectancy predictions. When I was in grade school my mom got really sick and after years of tests she was diagnosed with another auto immune disease called lupus.
I have watched my mom battle with this disease and prove that this illness did not define who she was or dictate how she wanted to live her life. I have the utmost respect for my mom and for Clay Walker, who live their lives continually.
Clay Walker is an inspiration. He continues a successful career and gives back so much by raising money for MS research. He reminds us to live everyday to its fullest, you never know if you have a tomorrow.
Hope you take a deep breath and take a moment to be thankful.

Peace-
Jenn

The Temptations

Are you ready for The Temptations?

Great because they’re comin’ to the Fair!!!!
Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at 8:30 p.m.
Budweiser Variety Free Stage
Presented by Bud Light
Hosted by Oldies 97.5 KABX

They’re still around after four decades of swooning and enchanting. I can’t tell you the hundreds of times I’ve had “The Way You Do the Things You Do or “My Girl stuck in my head. I love their sound.

When I was a kid, every morning before school, my parents would turn on the local radio station to help my sister and I get up and moving. Dad would sing to me while singing along with the radio. One of those songs was “My Girl, though he didn’t know all the words and made a lot up as he went. I loved being his girl, still am. So I smile when I hear that song. So look for the blonde girl with the cheesy smile at the concert!

See ya there- Jenn

Beach Boys Surfin to the Fair!

I grew up listening to The Beach Boys and even though I lived in the valley I wanted to be a ‘little surfer girl.’ I always think of my uncle Jimmy when I hear The Beach Boys. He took my sister and me to the beach once when he was visiting, and after a drive of blaring “Surfin Safari and “California Girls we were ready to hit the water. I started swimming, I could feel the swell of water- then all of a sudden I could feel something swim up next to me, but before I could move or kick or scream
IT Got Me!
The nasty little jellyfish swam right into my ARMPIT and stung the ba-jeebers out of me! As I swam one armed to the shore, feeling crippled forever I could hear a small boom box on the shore singing “Fun, Fun, Fun. It seemed to be my last lament, my life flashing before my eyes, I could see a light in the distance… well not quite, but the irony was too much.
So all in all I am telling you all this because, well, I’m sure you can guess:
The Beach Boys are coming to the Fair!!!! (With no jellyfish in sight)
