KatnAnna - Local Choices of the Central Valley's blog

First Annual "Pomegranate Festival" this Saturday

Another community event we wanted to share!

Had A Great Time at Last Nights Art Walk!

It's all about returning to community and appreciating what is in our own neighborhoods!

It was so much fun and great to see this event being supported by Motown locals! I loved cruising downtown art galleries that were open to all, some with foods and live music. Restaurants and bars were hopping with a friendly sociable vibe. Graceada Park was filled with families and locavores of all ages enjoying an evening of music at the Mancini Bowl. I was happy to run into my friends Jim Christiansen and Christine Pierson who are so dedicated in creating this enjoyable artisan affair, as they were in helping us through our "Pick & Gather" week-end. They have done a wonderful job connecting downtown and the community with local artists and musicians!

Local Choices now on Ning.com, the most sustainable network in the San Joaquin Valley!

Local Choices has created a new online social network to connect people in our central valley who are interested in learning about or living a sustainable lifestyle. All are welcome to join and chat with others, share blog posts, photos, videos, local events and any other related news or information. This is a great opportunity to share ideas, discuss important issues and build a community that cares!

"The Pick & Gather at riverdance Farms"

"The Pick & Gather at Riverdance Farms" is now a sweet memory of beautiful cherries, blueberries, river fare, archery, happy families, excited children, farm animals, great music, talented artisans, excellent resource information & demonstrations, tasty foods & wines!

A HUGE thank you to Cindy Lashbrook and Bill Thompson for sharing their gorgeous organic farm with our community and all that supported with sponsorship, vendor space, foods, demos, entertainment and volunteering.

A special thank you to Jim Christiansen and Christine Pierson for the beautiful art work, t-shirt printing and outreach to the Modesto community. Their time and dedication to this heartland event is truly appreciated!

We hope all who experienced this special farm celebration will have taken away with them an appreciation for what our central valley has to offer.

Thank you to all for supporting this week-end on the farm by your presence...

see you next year,

Happy Farming.... Kat and Anna!

My CSA box from Rancho Piccolo

I get so excited every time I pick it up, its like a present… what will be inside?

Honestly, I had no idea this would be my reaction when I signed up for this CSA.

In the past I shopped mindlessly at the grocery store not caring where my food came from, content with the fact that I was buying healthy fruits and vegetables in the “organic section" (with food from very far away).

Now I know exactly where each and every unpestified bite was grown, just 10 miles up the road.

Its like a "food power trip" for me!

This box had rutabagas, multi colored carrots, green leaf lettuce, turnips, gourmet lettuce, radish, leeks, rainbow chard, desert artichokes, pixie tangerines and a very informational news letter.

Our letter tells us members what farmer David and Michelle are up to, like laying potential of their chickens and explaining the size, what is being planted next and how long it will take.

Did you know it takes 3 full years to get a crop of asparagus? first year no harvest, second year a few spears and third year, boom… they are ready to go!

And thanks to this letter that also includes recipes, I know what to do with some of this food I’ve never seen before.

In May there will be a planting party/open house, with activities, the planting of trees and vines, brunch, dinner and finishing the day with a members meeting. Unfortunately I wont make it to that fun day with my food source, but we will have a guest post & pictures by farmers David and Michelle for you to see!

Now you know where my "food power trip" comes from,
does your food give you this reaction and this much fun?

Happy Farming,
Just Anna!

CSA any one?

So...

We noticed all of the "famous" people that have checked out our Farmer Dave, yay!

Now we are wondering if any one has actually contemplated ordering that beautiful box of food?

If so let us know if you are supporting the farmers that feed us!
